This comes as something of a surprise, here on the evening of the Game Awards. We knew that Fortnite was in the midst of a Star Wars crossover, with plans to debut a new scene from The Rise of Skywalker on Saturday at the in-game movie theater, and we had already had one Stormtrooper skin show up in the shop. But today saw a much bigger drop: we now have skins for Rey, Finn and a Sith Trooper, available in the item shop right now.
This being Fortnite, there are some extra goodies in the mix there too. Rey is paired with a quarterstaff harvesting tool, and the Sith Trooper is paired with a Riot Control baton. Rey and Finn get little holographic Jedi and Alliance back blings, respectively, and the Sith Trooper gets a non-usable blaster to sling over his shoulder.
You can buy all three skins together for 3,500 V-bucks, or each individually for 1,500. The harvesting tools come in at 800 a pop.
Finn and the Sith Trooper aren’t all that surprising: they’re both gun-toting characters with a little less moral heft than Rey. But I’m a little bit surprised to see Rey in there, to be honest: she’s in many ways the central character of the new trilogy, and I didn’t necessarily expect Disney to throw her in there. I’m sure all three will sell well, of course.
Fortnite is teasing some sort of major new announcement at the Game Awards this evening, and there’s a good chance it could be Star Wars-related, as well. Dataminers have found evidence that might point to some kind of lightsaber LTM, which would likely send Rey sales through the roof. It would present some gameplay challenges as well, but Fortnite has never really had a problem stretching the bounds of verisimilitude in order to achieve wacky white-knuckle action.
Arguably Fortnite’s biggest crossover yet was the Avenger’s event with Endgame, but it’s possible that we could yet see a whole lot more from Star Wars before the movie premieres. Disney goes all out, as we’ve seen, and there may yet be some surprises in store on Saturday.
