October saw the release of Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro. Although expensive, it became the flagship MacOS Catalina laptop, and featured a number of welcome tweaks, notably better temperature management and a scissor switch based keyboard replacing the embarrassing butterfly keyboard.
The laptop was well received by the media and Apple’s geekerati, but it remains a premium laptop with prices starting at $2,399 for the base model. That’s a hefty premium – as you would expect from Apple – but tucked away online in the Apple Store pages is a little bit of help… a way to get a cheaper 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Although it is rarely linked from the front page, Apple has had a ‘Refurbished’ part of its online store for many years. It generally offers a fifteen percent saving on Apple products. And the products? I’ll leave that to Apple to explain:
Every Apple Certified Refurbished product completes a rigorous refurbishment process that includes full testing that meets the same functional standards as new Apple products. Your refurbished device is truly “like new.” “
The only real difference is you’re going to get the product in a nondescript white box, rather than the regular retail packaging. More importantly, you still get the same one-year warranty that would come with a brand new machine, and you can still add on Apple Care.
Four months after the launch of the larger laptop, the 16-inch MacBook Pro has show up in Apple’s refurbished store. With the regular fifteen percent discount, you are looking at around a $400 saving depending on the specifications you choose.
Just be aware that stock levels will change rapidly, and if something is not in stock it simply won’t be listed. But when the 16-inch MacBook Pro is listed, and you need a deal but want to stay inside Apple’s velvet lined store, you know what to do.
