Business is competitive, no matter what you’re selling, where you’re selling it, or who you’re selling it to – there are going to be plenty of competitors, and ignoring that fact and what those competitors are doing is a bad idea. Understanding more about them and how they work is a wise thing to do, as then you’ll know precisely what you’re up against.

Once you do know more about your competitors, you’ll need to come up with a plan to stand out so you get your fair share (or more than your share!) of customers, and although there are a few different options you can take, one that will generally work is to ensure your products are unique. In that way, you might still have competition, but it won’t be so direct and it will be easier to persuade customers that they need what you’re selling. With that in mind, here are some ways to ensure your products are unique and use that fact to your advantage.

Research Your Competition

Research Your Competition

As we said, ignoring what your competitors are doing is a bad idea because you’ll never be sure your products are unique if you’re never sure what other people are selling. So the first step you’ll need to take is to research your competition to determine what it is they do that’s similar to you. Understanding that means you can then work hard on the areas where you can differentiate yourself without having to compromise your business to do so.

At this point, it’s also a good idea to research your market and customers. After all, knowing that your products are unique is great, but are those unique products really something that people want to buy? If not, there’s no point in selling them or putting the time and effort into creating them in the first place. Do plenty of market research so you know for sure what it is your target market wants, then make that product different to everyone else’s, and you’ll have a hit on your hands.

Show Innovation

Something that always goes down well and that can easily make your products unique is innovation – that’s really at the heart of uniqueness when you think about it. If you’re going to create products that stand out, think about how you can use new technologies, materials, or processes in your product and its design, and that’s definitely going to help. If you can ‘think outside the box’ and perhaps improve an existing product that people already like to use, you’ll already have a built-in audience, so that could be a good step to take first before then coming up with brand-new but related products too.

When you’re coming up with new designs for old products or entirely new products altogether, the best way to start is by thinking of the customer – what’s going to make their lives easier or more fun? What’s going to make an item more enjoyable to use? Answer those questions and you’ll be well on your way to not only having a unique product but also having one that people are going to be willing to spend money to get, which is vital when you’re running a business.

Use Custom Parts

Another fantastically effective way to ensure your product is unique is by incorporating custom parts into its design – no one else is going to be able to make precisely the same thing as you if you always make sure you do that.

Although you might have some great ideas about how to create custom parts and products, unless you have the right tools and practical know-how, it’s usually best to speak to experts to put your ideas to the test and create the items you need. For example, if you need some specific springs for a certain project, it’s wise to speak to a highly regarded custom spring manufacturer to do the work and to discuss you needs. They’ll not only be able to help you ensure your design will work, but you can also be sure the items you receive will do the job you need them to, and that they’re a high-quality product.

When you’re ordering custom parts, think about how each element is going to contribute to the overall uniqueness of the product, and don’t just add things for the sake of it – there’s unique and useful and there’s unique and useless, and the line between the two can be very narrow; if you’re not careful, you’ll overstep and then you’ll find no one wants to buy what you’re selling.
