Alex Montiel is the host of Estrella TV’s new evening talk show “Nos cayó la noche.”
EstrellaTV is sprucing up its primetime weeknight lineup with its first original show of 2020 and it’s looking to tap into a younger audience by hiring a popular Mexican YouTuber to host it.
Nos Cayó La Noche, hosted by comedian and voice over actor Alex Montiel, premieres nationwide on the network on Monday, February 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
Following a late-night show format, Montiel will do in-studio sit down interviews with influential and popular Hollywood A-listers and Latino entertainers. The one-hour program will also showcase Montiel’s alter ego, “Escorpión Dorado” (Golden Scorpion), a Mexican masked wrestler who will interview celebrities while driving in a convertible, as well as unsuspecting people on the street.
Actor Jaime Camil, who has done a successful crossover from Mexican telenovelas thanks to his role on Jane the Virgin and stars in the upcoming CBS sitcom Broke, is the show’s inaugural guest. Mexican rock icons Alex and Chela Lora, and musical guest Carolina Ross are also on the debut episode, which will include a segment with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence (pre-taped, presumably to promote the Bad Boys For Life movie).
Future guests include Jim Carrey, Michael Peña, Omar Chaparro, Julio César Chávez, Pepe Aguilar, Danna Paola and Adal Ramones.Considered a “mega influencer,” Montiel’s YouTube Channel “PeluchEn ElEStuche,” in which he appears as “Escorpión Dorado”, has 7.46 million subscribers. His videos on that channel typically generate between 6 to 12 million views each. His other YouTube channel “La Lata,” where he appears as himself reviewing films and interviewing Hollywood A-listers, is a little more modest. It has 2.54 million subscribers and less views per video. Montiel also has a strong social media following on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Nos Cayó La Noche bumps long-running Noches con Platanito, a talk show hosted by Mexican comedian Sergio Verduzco, who conducted interviews dressed as a clown. Estrella TV ceased production of the show in 2019 amid bankruptcy proceedings of its parent company LBI Media. It exited chapter 11 with new management in October 2019.
The network often referred to Noches con Platanito as a popular, ratings generator. But now, Estrella TV is under new management that’s looking to update the network’s programming and improve its image.
“We are very proud of the show Noches Con Platanito for which we produced approximately 700 shows and felt it was time to expand the creative influence and evolve the show,” states Iván Stoilkovich, Estrella TV’s EVP of television programing. “Our mission is to continue producing relevant content for our audience and hope that Nos Cayó La Noche will continue the success we had with Noches con Platanito.”
According to the company, Noches con Platanito is a “key part of the Estrella TV library” and it will probably find a timeslot in its grid to air reruns.
