NASHVILLE, TN – FEBRUARY 08: Kenny Rogers performs during 1 Night. 1 Place. 1 Time: A Heroes & … [+]
As the world mourns the loss of country music favorite Kenny Rogers, millions of fans all around the world have expressed their grief by buying their favorite songs by the star. While he churned out plenty of hits during his lifetime, the performer’s art lives on after him, and this week he makes quite the impression on the sales ranking because of the incredible leap in purchases of his best-known works.
The late, great Rogers currently claims the top two spots on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart, which ranks the bestselling individual tracks in the U.S. every week. It’s fairly uncommon for any artist to occupy more than one rung inside the competitive region, and owning the top two is even rarer, and a true sign that an artist is loved.
Up first is “The Gambler,” which will surely go down as Rogers’ best-known track. The song debuts at No. 1 with 21,000 sales in the past tracking frame, according to data published by Billboard and shared by Nielsen Music. Just behind that cut comes “Islands in the Stream,” one of his duets with Dolly Parton. That tune sold another 15,000 copies in the past week.
Amazingly, Rogers’ name appears in two additional rungs inside the top 10 on the Digital Song Sales chart, as “Lady” opens at No. 7 and “Through the Years” lands at No. 9. Those popular releases sold 10,000 and 9,000 copies, respectively.
Four top 10 placements at one time is quite the accomplishment for any artist, especially one who hasn’t scored a hit single in many years. The last artist to own that much real estate on the sales-only chart was BTS, who dominated the list when their new album Map of the Soul: 7 arrived earlier this month.
While the aforementioned songs were all very popular when they first worked their way up various Billboard charts, none of them have ever appeared on the Digital Song Sales ranking, as it didn’t exist until long after Rogers’ heyday. In fact, the musician appears on the list for the first time this frame, and he earns quite a few placements all at once.
