Scores of Big Apple eateries are evaporating amid the coronavirus crisis. So each week, Help Our Neighborhood Restaurants will highlight top neighborhood spots fighting to stay afloat while adhering to strict safety standards: the HONoR Roll. Thanks to Kyrie Irving and Beyond Meat, a New Yorker in need will get a plant-based burger whenever you order.
The old world cafe of hand stapled tin ceilings, terrazzo floors, and a black marble soda fountain that takes you back to the Roaring Twenties is temporarily closed, but 99-year old Conti’s Pastry Shoppe is still taking pickup and delivery orders.
Conti’s signature is a fluffy Boston Cream pie, invented by founder Augustino Conti, has been a staple delicacy of the Morris Park section of the Bronx for nearly a century.
“I feel like Spring is the awakening of the parties,” laments co-owner Christina DiRusso, who waited tables at the Conti’s as a teenager and bought the business sixteen years ago alongside co-owners. The cancelled weddings and Easter celebrations have hit Conti’s hard, but DiRusso’s team is working hard to make sure birthday celebrations go on.
“In the past week, I’ve gotten at least fifty orders for people who still want to celebrate birthdays within their household, especially people who have young children” she says.
Conti’s is taking orders over phone, email, and its website. DiRusso says social media networks like Facebook and Instagram have helped mightily as fans of the pastry shop order using instant messages and social posts.

“We’ve really poured a lot of love into this store and we have an amazing team of decorators and bakers,” says DiRusso, “Our customers have become like family to us.”
Her staff are working in shifts to stay busy and Conti’s plans to deliver coffee and breakfast pastries to local hospitals in The Bronx. “We’ve been around for 99 years and that includes the Great Depression,” says DiRusso. “So I feel like we’ll be able to sustain this. But it is scary.”
