Earlier today Activision and Infinity Ward officially unveiled Warzone, the new free-to-play, stand-alone Modern Warfare Battle Royale game.
I have a write-up about the game that you can read to learn about its new features, launch time, new trailer, screenshots and more. Mostly, it sounds really great.
There’s just one problem as far as I’m concerned, though it is a pretty big one, at least for me personally.
Unlike PUBG, Fortnite and Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout Battle Royale mode, in Warzone you can only play in squads of three.
There is no Duos mode. There is no Solos mode. Squads of four are nowhere to be found. There are two modes—Battle Royale and the respawn-enabled Plunder mode—but each of these can only be played in Squads of three players.
This strikes me as a pretty baffling mistake on Infinity Ward’s part. It’s the same structure as Apex Legends, which has always had squads of three since launch (except for the occasional experimental mode, like the game’s brief Solos outing). But Apex Legends is built around Legends using their hero powers in a coordinated fashion. Teamwork is, at least theoretically, at the core of Apex Legends and Solos fundamentally changes that.
Not so in Warzone, which isn’t a hero-based shooter at all. Squads are a great way to play battle royale games and I’d be just as shocked if Warzone had only Solos mode and nothing else. Leaving either option out is frankly baffling. Players should have more choices, not fewer. If I want to play with a squad, great. If I want to play solo, that should also be an option.
Hopefully Solos and Duos are both added in the near future. I know I just don’t always have a squad to team up with and sometimes I just want to play on my own without teammates. Seems like a pretty standard option to have in a game like this.
Warzone launches tomorrow morning on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Read all about it here.
