Donald Cerrone has 50 professional MMA fights. During that run he has put together a record of 36-13-0-1. During his career, Cerrone has only endured one three-fight losing skid. He looks to avoid a second skid of that length when he faces Conor McGregor in the main event of Saturday’s UFC 246 pay-per-view card.
Prior to his highly anticipated battle with the former two-division UFC champ, here is a look at three must see bouts from Cerrone’s UFC career.
Eddie Alvarez won the Bellator lightweight title for the second time in his career in November 2013. In August 2014, Bellator announced that it had released Alvarez. Days later, the UFC announced it had signed Alvarez. His first fight with the promotion came against Cerrone, who at the time was on a four-fight winning streak in the lightweight division. All four of those fights ended via finish and Cerrone had claimed a post-fight bonus with each of those victories. Booking Alvarez against Cerrone was a way to throw the former Bellator fighter right into the deep end of the lightweight pool. Cerrone won that fight by decision.
Cerrone’s second welterweight fight with the UFC came in June 2016 when he faced Patrick Cote in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 89. He was 1-0 at welterweight and coming off a submission win over Alex Oliveira when he faced Cote, who was on a 3-0 run. Cerrone dominated the entire fight. He looked close to finishing the fight in the second round. In the third stanza, Cerrone picked it up a notch, scoring two knockdowns before the referee waved off the fight at the 2:35 mark of the third stanza.
Cerrone faced Rick Story on the UFC 202 PPV card in August 2016. Cerrone was two fights into his 170-pound run with the UFC. Cerrone was 2-0 in those fights. The UFC awarded him “Performance of the Night” bonuses for both outings, which ended via stoppage. Story had gone 3-0 heading into the Cerrone matchup. Cerrone looked good during the first round, but it was the combination that led to the finish of this fight that puts it on this list. The stoppage earned Cerrone his third straight post-fight bonus award.
UFC 246 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 18. The pay-per-view card streams on ESPN+, following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ESPN+.
