Conor McGregor fans have been waiting a long while for the former two-division UFC titleholder to return to the octagon. The Irishman with the big left hand, ends his time away from the cage on Saturday, January 18 when he faces ex-lightweight title challenger Donald Cerrone in the main event of the ESPN+ streaming UFC 246 pay-per-view card.
The headlining bout is a welterweight contest.
McGregor’s most recent trip to the cage was not a successful one. He was the victim of a fourth-round submission loss to lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in that October 2018 contest. Despite that loss, UFC president Dana White has mentioned that if McGregor can defeat Cerrone and Nurmagomedov successfully defends his title against Tony Ferguson in April when they meet at UFC 249, McGregor is likely to end up in line for a rematch with Nurmagomedov. White has not made the same promise to Cerrone.
McGregor’s most recent win was his November 2016 TKO of Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205. That stoppage earned McGregor the lightweight crown.
Cerrone has made the walk to the octagon five times since McGregor last fought. Cerrone’s record in the bouts stands at 5-2. The first of those five wins came in a “Performance of the Night” bonus-winning effort against Mike Perry at welterweight. Cerrone dropped back down to the lightweight division following that win. He is 0-2 in his two most recent bouts. Cerrone lost both contests, the first to Tony Ferguson and the second to Justin Gaethje, by TKO. Cerrone has not had his hand raised in victory since he scored a May 2019 decision over Al Iaquinta.
UFC 246 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 18. The pay-per-view card streams on ESPN+, following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ESPN+.
