The main event of last night UFC on ESPN+ 30 fight card was a rematch that turned into a grudge match.
In February, Deiveson Figueiredo and Joseph Benavidez met in what was initially booked as a bout to determine the UFC flyweight champion. That plan fell apart when Figueiredo weighed in heavy for the fight. Benavidez could have won the title since he made the 125-pound limit. That did not happen. Instead, Figueiredo defeated Benavidez by knockout seconds after the two clashed heads.
The rematch took place last night on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. Both fighters made weight for the scrap, which headlined UFC on ESPN+ 30.
Figueiredo dominated the entire fight, which fell 12 seconds short of lasting five minutes.
Figueiredo put Benavidez in danger with the first punch he landed. A big right hand put Benavidez on the mat. From there, Figueiredo tried his best to force his opponent to tap to several deep chokes. Benavidez was able to fight off the submission attempts.
A flash knockdown followed and then another official knockdown.
That second knockdown again resulted in Figueiredo going for a choke submission. He was able to secure his fourth submission attempt. The choke rendered Benavidez unconscious. The fight was waved off at the 4:48 mark of the first round.
With Figueiredo’s win, every UFC title now has an owner.
